Noticing and Naming and Staying Positive

I -- along with many of us -- have been struggling with staying positive and focusing on the positive with my class. I am definitely spending most of my time noticing the negative. This chapter made me think about naming and noticing positive behavior with kids -- not just the kids with behavior challenges but all the kids. I'm going to work really hard to name and notice positive behavior (and not just as an instrument of change) today. Let's see how it goes. -llm.

  1. I've been feeling the same way. I've been feeling behind and like we're not making much progress. When I focus on the negative it seems that more negative behavior occurs. Today I focused on pointing out what students can do now that they couldn't do at the beginning of the year. After that comment, I really noticed a shift in students being more engaged.

    1. Glad you noticed a difference. We had another rough day in Room 9. I did get a chance to focus on specific positive behavior, however. I'd been asking kids to help their classmates make better choices when I'm trying to get the class' attention. Two kids reminded the people at their table -- effectively, I might add -- to be quiet when I was asking for quiet. I named and noticed the behavior. I got two beaming smiles in return! I'll take it. Focus on positive!
